MOSS HOLLOWE FARMS, LLC

from sheep to art

There are no purebred Gotlands in the U.S. Since our borders are closed to livestock importation, the only way to bring them here is through an up breeding program, which began on the West Coast several years ago. Currently, the highest percentage Gotland in the U.S. is around 95% pure, so we are getting close! High percentage animals are still very rare, however, and even rarer in the East and Southeast. We are the first in this region to be part of the breeding program. Now is your chance to be part of it! Check out our Gotland Sheep page to learn more about this unique rare breed and our sheep for sale below.

Rare opportunity. Be among the first in the region, and even in the U.S., to be part of the Gotland up-breeding program. There is growing demand for Gotland fiber as more and more spinners and breeders learn of this stunning animal. It was a Gotland sheep who took top honors at Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival in 2014, and Gotland fleece is selling for top price. Read more about this magnificent and unusual breed on our Gotland page.

Most of the rare Gotlands in the U.S. are located in the West, with very few breeders in the East, and, except for our farm, none in the South. Gotland are a very hardy and adaptable breed and have done very well for us, showing excellent worm resistance and no health issues. They also tend to be more friendly and inquisitive rather than timid like most sheep, making them a joy to care for.

Moss Hollowe Derby is the first REGISTERED Gotland ram in the region (rams must be over 86% pure to be registered. Ewes need only be 75% pure). Derby is 87.5% pure, and he is gorgeous. He is also very well mannered and easy to handle. We can put together a package with Derby and three or four ewes to get you started. Contact us for more info!
